ARLES GUIDED TOUR- THE PROGRAM
PROVENCE TOUR
From the ancient city to the modern city, the history of Arles is rich and fascinating. We will begin with the discovery of this beautiful place of the republic fitted out during the construction of its town hall in the 17th century and then embellished with its Roman obelisk. Through the portal of the old Saint Trophime cathedral, we will unveil the medieval period of our city. Prestigious and tormented period are the palace despodestats, the old town hall is a magnificent witness.
Unmissable, we will have to climb to the heights, all relative to the capital of Camargue to admire our Roman monuments: the theater and the amphitheater (the arenas) surprise us at the bend of a small alley by their gigantism and harmony … Our walk will continue in the footsteps of the artists and of course mainly those of Vincent Van Gogh who stayed 15 months in our city to make his plan to open an artist’s studio = the midi workshop. The café terraces on the Place du Forum and the old hospital (Espace Van Gogh) are the two places that marked our meeting with this famous designer and colorist.
And we will also evoke the modern city; with the Van Gogh foundation, photography and its lair: the Réattu museum and the many galleries animating our internationally renowned city on a still and still very human scale, and the other foundation: Luma and its modern lighthouse = the tower built by Frank Gehry, where artists and scientists have the means to give free rein to their art and project. History continues and the love of history and heritage is shared
